Egress Window Installation in Winnipeg

Cutting a code opening through a foundation wall is structural work, not window work.

An egress window is the one job on this site where the visible product is a window and the actual work is a controlled cut through a structural wall. Winnipeg Foundation Experts treats it as foundation work, because that is what the difficult part is.

The Opening Is the Job

A basement wall is doing two things at once. It carries the load of the house above, and it resists the pressure of soil pushing in from outside. Cutting a rectangular hole in it removes a section of both.

So the sequence matters. We work out the span, install support above the opening, and only then cut. A lintel sized for the load above the window keeps the wall doing its job with a hole in it. Cutting first and improvising support afterwards is how a straightforward job becomes a structural repair.

Poured concrete and block walls behave differently under this. Block has cavities and mortar joints that concentrate stress at the cut line, so the approach changes accordingly.

Meeting Egress Requirements

If the basement is being finished with a bedroom, the opening has to be big enough for a person to get out of and for a firefighter in gear to get in through. That drives minimum dimensions for the opening itself, and it usually means the hole is larger than people expect when they first picture it.

It is worth checking these requirements before framing a basement bedroom rather than after, because the wall opening is far cheaper to plan than to redo.

The Window Well and Its Drainage

Below grade, the window sits in a well, and that well needs somewhere for water to go. Drainage stone in the base and a route to the existing drainage system stops the well from filling.

This is the part most often skipped, and it is the part that causes the callbacks. A well without drainage collects every rainfall against the newest opening in your foundation.

Winnipeg Specifics

Frost depth here means the excavation for the well goes deeper than in milder places, and the clay backfill around it needs care on the way back in. Poorly compacted backfill settles, the ground slopes toward the new well, and water follows it.

If you are finishing a basement and need an egress opening, we will look at the wall and tell you what it needs. The assessment is free. Related: window wells on their own, foundation crack repair if the wall already has cracking near the planned opening, and concrete repair. We work throughout Charleswood and St. James, where basement finishing is common in the post-war stock.

Egress Window Installation Questions

Why does a basement bedroom need an egress window?

Building codes require a bedroom below grade to have an opening a person can get out of, and that firefighters can get in through, without tools. If you are finishing a basement bedroom, the egress opening is not optional and it is not the last step to think about.

Is cutting into a foundation wall safe?

It is, when the opening is planned and supported properly. That wall is carrying load, so the cut needs a lintel sized for the span above it. The risk comes from cutting first and thinking about support afterwards.

Can any window company do this?

The window itself is straightforward. The part that matters is the hole, and that is concrete cutting and structural support in a wall that is holding up your house and holding back soil. It is foundation work with a window at the end of it.

Does the window well need drainage?

Yes. A well with no drainage becomes a bucket sitting against your foundation, and the first heavy rain puts that water straight through the new opening. The well base gets drainage stone and a path to the drainage system.
